Data recovery FAQ

What kind of problems are you able to take care of?
We have everything to get the most from your drive. Here are some typical cases we see from day to day in our lab.

What are the chances of recovering my data?
In most cases, the majority of the data is recoverable; so don't automatically assume that your data can't be recovered. The average percentage of successful retrievals is in the 85-90% range.

I was told that my data is unrecoverable. Does that mean that I should forget about it?
That only means that it is unrecoverable for those who told you that. We suggest you get a second opinion from us just to make sure. We often receive such second-hand drives and sometimes we successfully recover them. There's no harm trying. Don't forget about our No Data - No Charge policy.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee?
No. We do not charge a diagnostic fee. If your data is not recoverable, your only expense will be shipping charges (if you require the media to be returned).

Will you pick up my media?
Yes. We will pick up any form of media (even take it out of the computer if you don't feel comfortable doing it) and return it to you if you live in the Ottawa area. Otherwise, you should ship your drive to our lab.

How is my data returned to me?
It's your choice. The options are: CD, DVD, new hard drive, your or our secure ftp-server.

How can I prevent future data loss from happening?
To prevent future data loss, it is crucial that you back up your data regularly to the network or locally. It is also a good idea to purchase and install anti-virus software and download the latest virus updates monthly. Additionally, you can purchase a surge protector. It is designed to protect your computer against an electrical surge, blackouts and lightening strikes.
